Why CO2-Only Fleet Reporting Misses Most of Your Air-Quality Impact
If your fleet sustainability report shows a single CO2 or fuel number, you are reporting a fraction of your environmental impact, and quite possibly the least locally relevant fraction. CO2 matters for climate accounting, but it says almost nothing about the air quality of the communities your fleet drives through. Here is why, and what to do about it.
What CO2 actually measures
CO2 output is essentially proportional to fuel burned. That makes it a decent efficiency metric and the right currency for carbon accounting. But two trucks burning identical fuel can have wildly different air-quality footprints depending on the state of their emission-control systems. CO2 cannot see that difference.
CO2 is a greenhouse gas measured for climate impact. NOx, PM and HC are criteria air pollutants measured for local health and air quality. Reporting one and calling it 'emissions' quietly ignores the other.
What CO2-only reporting hides
- NOx, the pollutant most tied to smog and roadside air-quality limits; can spike 10x when after-treatment fails, with no change in CO2.
- PM, soot particulates with direct respiratory-health links, trapped by filters that CO2 reporting never checks.
- HC, unburned hydrocarbons that signal incomplete combustion, wasted fuel that a fuel-total still counts as 'normal'.
This is exactly how a small number of malfunctioning trucks can dominate a fleet's real pollution while looking unremarkable on a fuel report.
Why this is becoming a business problem
Customers, lenders and municipalities are increasingly asking for more than a carbon figure. Air-quality commitments, procurement requirements and community reporting all want the pollutants people actually breathe. A fleet that can only produce CO2 is unprepared for that conversation.
What to measure instead
